چکیده

We present the design of a variable-temperature ultrahigh vacuum ~UHV! scanning tunneling microscope which can be operated between 20 and 400 K. The microscope is mounted directly onto the heat exchanger of a He continuous flow cryostat without vibration isolation inside the UHV chamber. The coarse approach is performed with an inertial slider driven by the same piezo tube that is also used for scanning. The performance of the instrument is demonstrated by two different kinds of measurements: First we show topographic images of close packed metal surfaces with atomic resolution. Then, we present results from scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on WSe2 under illumination at variable temperatures. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~98!02004-8#

An ultrahigh vacuum fast-scanning and variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope for large scale imaging.

We describe the design and performance of a fast-scanning, variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating from 80 to 700 K in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), which routinely achieves large scale atomically resolved imaging of compact metallic surfaces. An efficient in-vacuum vibration isolation and cryogenic system allows for no external vibration isolation of the UHV chamber. The d...

New variable low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope for use in ultrahigh vacuum

We describe the design and characterization of a new variable low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope @TM) which has been proven to give atomic resolution at temperatures between 77 K and room temperature but which is also capable of performing experiments as low as 4 K. The STM “head” itself consists of a unique cold dewar made up of an upper and lower reservoir connected together by two...

A new scanning tunneling microscope reactor used for high-pressure and high-temperature catalysis studies.

We present the design and performance of a homebuilt high-pressure and high-temperature reactor equipped with a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope (STM) for catalytic studies. In this design, the STM body, sample, and tip are placed in a small high pressure reactor ( approximately 19 cm(3)) located within an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) chamber. A sealable port on the wall of the reactor s...

Variable-temperature independently driven four-tip scanning tunneling microscope.

The authors have developed an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) variable-temperature four-tip scanning tunneling microscope (STM), operating from room temperature down to 7 K, combined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Four STM tips are mechanically and electrically independent and capable of positioning in arbitrary configurations in nanometer precision. An integrated controller system for both ...

A simple, ultrahigh vacuum compatible scanning tunneling microscope for use at variable temperatures

We present the construction of a very compact scanning tunneling microscope ~STM! which can be operated at temperatures between 4 and 350 K. The tip and a tiny tip holder are the only movable parts, whereas the sample and the piezoscanner are rigidly attached to the body of the STM. This leads to an excellent mechanical stability. The coarse approach system relies on the slip-stick principle an...
